Rural homestay on stilts
Mizoram, Concept, 2025
This homestay concept for Mizoram combines traditional stilted architecture with modern modular design. Elevated bamboo-and-wood structures embrace the landscape, offering guests light-filled, airy spaces that connect seamlessly to their natural surroundings. Locally sourced materials, passive strategies, and renewable energy integrate environmental stewardship with cultural authenticity. The result is a cozy, distinctive retreat that is both sustainable and rooted in the region’s identity.

The homestay project responds to the cultural and environmental context of rural Mizoram, where traditional houses on stilts and Assam-Type houses form the dominant typologies. Drawing inspiration from both, the design proposes a modular structure that adapts to varied terrain, plot sizes, and existing buildings. The first modules frame verandahs, courtyards, and balconies that orient towards the best views, while later extensions or rooftop placements allow for phased, flexible growth.
At the core of the design is a celebration of regional architectural heritage. Traditional elements such as bamboo screens, stilt construction, and simple, functional layouts are reinterpreted through modern craftsmanship. The multipurpose modules combine bedrooms, bathrooms, and outdoor seating, ensuring comfort while maintaining visual elegance and ease of maintenance. The central multipurpose space extends as a social verandah, fostering encounters and performances, while orchards and open grounds support community gatherings and experiential learning.
Sustainability anchors every design choice. Walls are built from bamboo, wood, and interwoven elements, with options for rice-husk insulation to improve thermal and acoustic comfort. Prefabricated bamboo-and-wood modules ensure efficiency and cost-effectiveness, while the structure sits on reinforced stilts that provide seismic resilience and flood safety. The sloping corrugated roof, supported by a lightweight truss system, integrates rainwater harvesting and accommodates solar panels, reinforcing the homestay’s low-carbon operation.
The project not only minimizes environmental impact but also empowers local communities. Training in block-making, bamboo craft, and assembly creates livelihood opportunities and ensures long-term replicability. Guests experience authentic Mizoram living, immersed in nature and culture, while hosts benefit from a resilient, sustainable, and adaptable structure.
The Sustainable Homestay in Mizoram thus becomes more than accommodation: it is an architectural statement of inclusive tourism, ecological responsibility, and cultural continuity.
